Why have the Black Locust trees been cut back?

Earlier this Fall, a black locust tree (#136) fell due to extensive root rot. The Riverview Lands Arborist assessed the fallen tree and reviewed the condition of nearby black locust trees. Adjacent trees #137 and #226 had evidence of crown dieback indicating likely root rot. The Riverview Lands Arborist prescribed for significant crown reduction to occur on both trees #137 and #226 in hope that a new crown can be regrown. This crown reduction took place earlier this week and as such both trees look somewhat 'topped'. As the black locust species is known to be very successful at sprouting new limbs it is hoped that the crown reduction process will help both trees re-grow and prevent further root rot damage.
